All people may be created equal, but the same cannot be said for all sugars. Before you grab your favorite sugar to sweeten your morning coffee, make sure it's not ruining your health.
BAD: Equal is an artificial sweetener made from aspartame, dextrose and maltodextrin. It is sold and marketed by the same corporation that owns NutraSweet (the trademarked brand name for aspartame).
BAD: Splenda is a chlorinated artificial sweetener derived from sugar. The main component is sucralose, a chlorocarbon that’s in the same family of chemicals as DDT and PCBs.
GOOD: Sugar in the Raw is a natural, unrefined turbinado sugar that’s crystallized from the initial pressing of sugar cane. It’s vegan and certified kosher, as bone char or other animal by-products are not used in the manufacture process.
BAD: Sweet’N Low is an artificial sweetener made from saccharin, dextrose and cream of tartar. In Canada, Sweet’N Low is made from sodium cyclamate because saccharin has not been allowed as a food additive since the 1970s.
GOOD: Truvia is a natural zero-calorie sweetener made from rebiana (a component of the stevia leaf), erythritol and natural flavors. It has no effect on the glycemic index, making it a safe alternative for people with diabetes.
