Culture Cram: 'Rizzoli & Isles' Season 3

Sasha Alexander and Angie Harmon have predictably different reactions to a Revolutionary War reenactor on TNT's Rizzoli & Isles.

Fans of the TNT drama Rizzoli & Isles waited anxiously for months to see the show's third season premiere and were rewarded for their patience with last week's season premiere.

You might be thinking this is just a derivative combination of police drama and medical procedural. That’s what I suspected before I began watching, but I was wrong. What sets Rizzoli & Isles apart is the clever depiction of the relationship between the two heroines. The women hang out together outside of work, over a drink at the bar or dinner at Maura's chic home.

They also couldn’t be more different. Tough-as-nails, T-shirt-and-slacks Jane grew up in a working-class family with two brothers. Walking encyclopedia and shoe addict Maura was adopted into a wealthy, educated family. The juxtaposition of the women's differences makes their friendship interesting and amusing to watch. Their characters prove that smart, successful women can also be beautiful, funny and vulnerable.

The importance of the women's friendship made this season's premiere so highly anticipated. Last season ended with a cliff hanger that left the pair's relationship up in the air. This season began with the women in a feud. As a viewer who loves both characters, it's hard to pick sides, which makes witnessing their disagreement so agonizing. In the season premiere, their tension culminated in a tragicomic "cat fight" in which it was revealed that Maura has watched The Jersey Shore for "ethnographic research." It's these kinds of moments which make the show so enjoyable and provide hopepossibly even assurancethat the title ladies will make up soon.

If you haven’t watched Rizzoli & Isles, it's definitely worth a try. I'm not usually a fan of detective dramas or doctor shows, but the friendship between Jane and Maura keeps me coming back.

Rizzoli & Isles is on Tuesday nights at 9/8c on TNT.

Do you watch Rizzoli & Isles? What did you think of the season premiere?
