Your Life: 'Plugging In' to Important Issues with Tumblr

The Tumblr news section knows what's up.

I'll let you in a frightening fact about my lifewhen I’m away at college, I don’t have television. Terrifying, I know. After spending all my mornings before high school at least listening to the news, I felt completely disconnected from the world without a TV.

I tried using the Internet to stay connected, but with all of the news sources, articles and subjects bouncing around, on top of my very busy schedule, I didn’t even know where to start. Don't fret me for, though. While this story did start out a little scary, it has a happy ending.

Tumblr, my personal favorite blogging site, is becoming a really great source for news. Sure, Tumblr is another source with endless content, but there are ways to customize the your dashboard, so you can stay in touch with the issues you care about most.

On your dashboard, there’s a link labeled “Find Blogs.” Here, you can select different subjects and see suggestions for blogs that suit your interests. One of the most useful topics here is “News,” where you can find blogs from reputable, and entertaining, news sources and keep up on the issues you when you can't follow TV newscasts.

If there's a specific topic you'd like at your fingertips, search for it on your dashboard in the box labeled "search tags." Once you've searched a tag, you can then choose to track it. Track tags will be available on your dashboard after you do this. For instance, I track the “feminism” tag, so that I can read every post tagged “feminism” on Tumblr. While there is a lot to sort through when you track a tag, you can find a plethora of information from all sides.

Now get out there and start Tumbling the news! If you're looking for some informational blogs, these are a few of my favorites:
barackobama.tumblr.com: the official blog for Obama’s campaign
motherjones.tumblr.com: the staff blog for Mother Jones, a news magazine
fuckyeahsexeducation.tumblr.com: this blog is jam packed with information on sexual health, gender issues and sexuality

What informational Tumblr blogs do you like to follow?
