From the music video for M.I.A.'s "Bad Girls."
Born in England and raised in Sri Lanka, M.I.A. (Maya Arulpragasam) has grown up to be quite an amazing woman. With three albums out and a fourth on the way, Maya is constantly working, and not just on her music.
On top of being a musician, M.I.A. is a mom, an artist and an activist. Her activism stems from the hard years she and her family spent in Sri Lanka when she was young. During the civil war raging in the country, Maya's school was bombed. She uses her celebrity to speak out against the war crimes and human rights violations committed during that civil war, and on similar conflicts worldwide. She also acts as a role model to refugee youth, hoping to show them that they too can be successful and escape their circumstances.
Though some of her methods and statements have been criticized, M.I.A. is working hard to raise awareness about important issues. Plus, ya know, she's pretty awesome.
