Chelsea Knot, the protagonist in Speechlessby Hannah Harrington, is the best friend of the most popular girl in school, Kristen. She stays on the queen bee’s good side by providing her with juicy gossip, along with staying mum whenever her so-called best friend says something negative about her.
Drunk, on power and Jell-O shots, she sees two gay teens making out at a party and immediately blabs to her group of friends. When her actions put someone’s life in danger, she decides to stop hurting people with her words by taking a vow of silence. After using words as a weapon to maintain her status with the friend’s who have now shunned her, in her silence she finds friends, along with a love interest, who not only show her the kind of person she is but also accept her.
Speechless addresses the real-life complications of going to high school, especially in certain small towns, including homophobia, gossip, bullying and the power of mean girls.
